Will Smith’s children and M. Night Shyamalan. Possibly the most hated movie pairing in quite some years. People don’t care about Jaden Smith at all and even the slight mention of M. Night can make people groan. so naturally they should make a Sci-Fi movie together.
Earth has been ruined by some event and humans have retreated to the stars. Will Smith plays some a famous general who returns home very much the absentee dad. Smith and his son, played by his son, somehow crash land on the abandoned earth. Will is injured and Jaden goes an adventure to save him. Then it turns out it’s really a computer.
I made up that last part. This movie won’t be out until next year but I just want to prepare you for when everyone tries to guess the Shyamalan twist. This one may be have a twist of course, though it is written by ‘Book of Eli’ scribe Gary Whitta. Eli had a bit of a twist so this might be quite the twisty writer/director team up.
Also prepare yourself for a lot of posters overselling the A.E title.
I just don’t see Shyamalan having the directing flare for a destroyed Earth landscape film. When he as at his best it was little moments that worked. The large scale scenes he attempted in ‘The Last Airbender’ fell absolutely flat. Maybe this will connect with a young audience like Jaden’s ‘Karate Kid’ did but the budget seems way to high just to go after the under 16 crowd.
Biggest bomb of 2013?
Funny you just wrote a post about M. Night, I was going to make fun of him in the post about ‘The Tall Man’ where you were talking about movies that are just about their ‘twists’. Did ‘The Last Airbender’ completely sour you to M. Night? You were one of his biggest supporters for the longest time. If so, that would be understandable, ‘The Last Airbender’ was beyond terrible.
He needs to redeem himself for me. But I liked him up to the Happening, was soured, then he ruined one of the best cartoons ever made. He’s got a lot of work to do in my book. I’m still just excited he didn’t end up doing Life Of Pi
I feel like he should work on something small and original (he is not good at adaptations!) for his next movie. Although come to think of it ‘Devil’ satisfies both of those…
