They want it real bad but they just aren’t sure how to get it. In a recent interview Sony exec Douglas Belgard talked about a few films in development and 80% of it is total bullshit.
First off the main topic was about the follow up the the just successful ‘The Amazing Spider-Man.’ They want this film made and quick. This means that director Marc Webb might not be able to return. This is awful. These need to be his films as much as the others were Sam Raimi’s. We’ve already seen what happens when the studio rushes it and tries to take control away and it was called ‘Spider-Man 3’ and it was a humongous pile of shit. I’m confused as to how they didn’t already have this planned out for a few films right off the bat. With scripts ready to go and everyone signed on to start filming soon. You know, the Marvel way.
Next up was talk about MIB. The third film was a huge box office surprise. A good word of mouth combined with a smart early summer release date gave this film a long run in the weekend top ten. They have reported they want a forth one but had the balls to say “we don’t have clarity yet on how it should be done.” It’s awful how this won’t stop the movie moving on in development.
In absolute left field craziness he also said they want to modernize a new version of ‘Jumanji.’ “We’re going to try and reimagine Jumanji and update it for the present.” What does that mean? ‘Jumanji’ took place in the 90s. Do they just want to add in the internet and cell phones to the plot. Here I sit like an idiot thinking the far superior ‘Zathura’ was the modern ‘Jumanji.’
The only good news was talk of a ’21 Jump Street’ sequel. Well played. You really need to lock Channing Tatum down these days because his dance card is going to be full for a while.
Sony is being run by the Gorilla from Congo.
This idea was just greenlit by Sony
