Let’s Delay Sunday
Anchorman 2
Anchorman was a resounding success. Will Ferrell is still working today because of this movie. Steve Carrell and Paul Rudd both owe a lot to this film. Ever since it was released 8 years ago people have been talking about a sequel. Will Ferrell has teased it during the press of every subsequent film he has made. It is finally happening.
People seem excited. I am terrified.
I was never a huge Will Ferrell fan when he was on SNL. I reluctantly saw this movie and ended up loving it. The problem came later when people quoted it. Though I thought it was very funny, my least favorite scenes were being quoted the most. I thought Steve Carrell’s character was lazy and uninspired. I still think Paul Rudd’s “sex panther” scene is an absolute waste of time.
This is even stranger since I’ve enjoyed Rudd and Carrell’s work since much better than Ferrell’s. Here lies a huge problem. The Will Ferrell character has grown tired. I don’t look forward to his films. This makes me worried that returning to the character of Ron Burgundy will be a disappointment. Rudd and Carrell returning to characters I’m not crazy about when they’ve done much better doesn’t interest me.
It’s been a very long time since this original. Will it still seem fresh? Do they really have a story that makes the wait worth it? It’s been way too long to have this be a sequel like the Austin Power’s films. Both sequels circled the same bits of the original without anything fresh about it. The added characters were lazy and didn’t quite fit in with the tone.
Do I have faith in Will Ferrell to not make these same mistakes and surprise me? Not after ‘Talladega Nights’, ‘Blades of Glory’, or ‘Semi-Pro.’
Even from the teaser, or whatever you want to call it, that has been going around now this sequel seems like the worst fucking idea ever. I just don’t care. I loved Anchorman, not initially, but grew to love it. The sex panther scene is a total waste of time, I agree. I’m afraid they think it has been so long they will just do the exact same jokes again and think they can get a pass. Fuck this movie.
