A Box of Home Movies in the Attic is Never a Good Sign

Sinister is the new horror film from director Scott Derrickson (The Exorcism of Emily Rose, The Day the Earth Stood Still) starring Ethan Hawke (Gattaca, White Fang) as an author who moves his family into a new house, a house with a tortured up past. I’ve been hearing quite a bit of positive feedback about this movie from those lucky enough to have caught it at SXSW and have been anxiously awaiting the trailer. Finally, the wait is over thanks to Arrow in the Head. I won’t lie, I was not enthralled by this trailer. Too much of it seemed cheesy (“I’m gonna write the best book that anyone’s ever read”), and it does that horror movies trailer thing where every time a certain noise plays they will cut to black, like in the Texas Chainsaw reboot and the camera sound, and it seemed like every other haunted house horror movie type.

Then at 2:16 into the trailer I was convinced I need to see it. Continue reading

The D is Silent

:Insert something mildly racist but heartwarming and funny here:
Out this Christmas, Tarantino’s latest, Django Unchained, doesn’t exactly feel or look like one of his at first, but it definitely sounds the part. I enjoy that. Check it:

The Bourne Legacy Trailer and the Case of the Good Sequel-Boot

I am excited for this movie.  By placing it directly within the timeline of the Jason Bourne films they aren’t absolutely shitting on our intelligence.  Jeremy Renner looks very capable to take over for Matt Damon.  Universal reallllllly needs this to do well.  Battleship tanked, and Snow White is a big gamble.

Check out the newest trailer here!

The Art of the Teaser

So many marketing companies, distributors, or directors themselves have no idea how to put an effective teaser together.  A teaser that is inherently a short trailer, is not a teaser.  A teaser with footage and/or dialogue from a previous film is NOT a teaser.  A teaser with dialogue from the film, but no footage whatsoever and instead a stupid revealing of the logo for the movie or something like that is NOT a teaser.  A well crafted teaser in my opinion offers you some dialogue and some footage from the film, but not necessarily of any correlation.  An effective teaser should make you want to learn as much about that film as possible, but not give you anything concrete.

An effective trailer in my opinion is for Paul Thomas Anderson’s latest film, The Master.  All I know is the movie has Philip Seymour Hoffman in it and Joaquin Phoenix, and has something to do with religion.  This trailer doesn’t give anything major away, but between the music and dialogue, I am very pumped for this film.

I Take The Oscar Bait.

This has so much Oscar Bait on it but I’m 100% in. I could be raped, and Bill Murray star in a bio-pic of my rapist that paints him in a good light and I’d see it and love it.

Guess Who: The Game, The Movie

Us guys at Movie Movie absolutely love movies, but fear the direction with which they are headed.  For some reason, the only movies that get greenlit anymore have to be based on something pre-existing to the point that we are getting Battleship next week.  This sketch, written and directed by our friends Mary Iampietro and Zach Broussard is not only hilarious, but a terrifying glimpse into what our future is going to be, if we don’t take control of our entertainment NOW!

OSCARBAIT: Ben Affleck’s Argo

I have no problem with Oscarbait, as long as it’s good.  Ben Affleck’s latest film is further proof that he had no business trying to be the It Man of Hollywood blockbusters and rom coms.  Instead of making shitburger after shitburger, his Gone Baby Gone, and The Town, showcased that the man can direct the hell out of a film, even if it’s fairly standard by plot.  He’s been reminiscent of Eastwood with his film direction, and even his acting has improved. That being said, I think Argo has the potential to be very good.
