TransFOURmers Casting

Mark Wahlberg has agreed to star in the rebootquel of the Transformers franchise.  According to Michael Bay, he listened to internet speculation and decided to make a run at getting Mark Wahlberg.  It paid off.  The Shia-less sequel has been said to be a shift in the franchise from being a human story with robots in it, to being more focused on the robots.  By removing Shia, I am hopeful that we get a more serious in tone film about toy robots.  Yea I just said that.

Transformers 4 is scheduled for release June 27th, 2014, assuming the world doesn’t end.

World War Z Trailer

I’m a little worried about the over CGI-zation of the Zombies themselves, but I kinda like that they move in tsunami-like hordes.  This is the first glimpse of the Zombie epic film.  I think it looks pretty decent nonetheless.  Marc Forster has made some good films, but then he’s also made Quantum of Solace…

Fake Movie Friday – The Compound

This is one of those middle eastern political thrillers about covert ops and stuff. I blame Hurricane Sandy for this being late.

Jamie Foxx and Jessica Biel play the lead Army Rangers, James Caller and Jill Harper who are recruited to do special ops missions for the CIA.  Their handler, Cal Marshall played by Kyle Chandler recruited them because he used to be their unit commander back in the day.  Anyway, Cal puts together covert mission to extract a U.S. POW, Will Stilton, played by Bill Fichtner from indiscriminant Arab terrorist forces, as soon as he gets the intel as to where Will is.

They go into some curiously empty cave thingy where the terrorists are and they extract Will using deadly force.  They are ambushed however by the indiscriminant terrorists and are all three, forced to hole up in a local town restaurant until the coast is clear.  Cal goes to the head of the CIA covert ops division, David Wallace, played by Mark Strong, to ask him to send more soldiers into their area because he got a distress call.  David says he wont risk it.  The information about this mission has already spread to far. Cal angrily reports back to James and Jill that they will have to get Will out themselves.  Cal put the mission together without his authorization, so he wont put his name on it.

James and Jill are partners long enough we can tell that they’ve been in situations like this before and know how to handle it, but Will tells them this is different.  If he gets back to the US and reports back on the terrorist activity he found, he’ll be a target.  Long story short he tells them that (flashback scene) David sent him to Iraq months ago to gain intel on terrorist activity and Will was too good at his job and found out that David was paying Iraqui terrorists to commit crimes on US soil, so that our foreign defense policies would look weak, he could gain more authority and use that to leverage a presidential campaign.  If Will comes back alive he’ll be killed and discredited.  James and Jill say that’s not going to happen.  They have a plan.  They decide, the only way to get back to the US safely, is to be considered dead.  They discreetly contact Cal and tell them what they’re going to do and he says it’s a suicide mission.  James says “exactly”.  They decide that they are going to go back into the caves, and go back INTO the terrorist compound to get hard evidence on David, and be considered dead.

The next act is nothing but a bunch of hardcore terrorist killing action by James and Will, while Jill does hacker stuff to get into rooms that have photos of David shaking terrorist dudes hands and stuff.  They get the info but not before Will is shot in the neck and killed.  He tells them he’ll die a patriot if they get that evidence back to someone they trust at the CIA.  David catches on that Cal’s been speaking with James and Jill and attempts to paint those three as US terrorists and uses his new authority to do so.  However, by the time James and Jill get back to US soil and get the flashdrive of information to one of the CIA field agents who is waiting to arrest them, the jig is up.  The agent calls to have another agent arrest David for crimes against the US.  He shoots one of the agents and James and now freed Cal run after him as he goes to a roof to get a helicopter.  James and Cal corner him and right as David tries to shoot Cal, Jill from behind shoots him.

James and Jill clear Will’s name, Cal takes over the division and everyone wins.  Some useless stats about military stuff plays on screen.  The end.

Disney Buys Lucasfilm! New Star Wars film in 2015

Disney just bought Lucasfilm outright for upwards of 4 BILLION dollars.  They are already stating that they are planning on getting a new Star Wars film (episode 7) into theaters by 2015.

I can barely believe this news.  Not only would Disney own the past rights to Star Wars, but they also will get their hands on the Indiana Jones franchise as well.  With their marketing muscle, we’re going to see some of the biggest films get bigger.  What I think might be the best part of this story is that George Lucas is apparently stepping down from his helm of Star Wars overlord to give new younger filmmakers a crack at telling stories in his world, while he’ll stick around as a creative consultant.  This is what I’ve hoped for for years.  Not only will episodes 8 and 9 happen too, but Star Wars world films will come out every 2 or 3 years after that.

Why the hell not?  Star Wars has such a rich world, that theres tons of other stories to tell.  Lucas created a fleshed out world so now with other people being able to get involved I think this can mean great things.

Just think about 2015.  We’ll have Disney putting out a Pixar film, Marvel’s Avengers 2, and Star Wars Episode 7.  They just won the box office war.

Michael Fassbender to Star in Assassins Creed film

Michael Fassbender has officially signed on to the Assassins Creed film, and will be one of the producers.

Look at Fassbenders film choices over the last 3 years.  He steals scenes and picks characters with real meat and content.  I have faith this will be the videogame adaptation to rule them all.

I’m pumped.

Nicolas Cage is Left Behind!

Nicolas Cage has signed on to star in a reboot of the Left Behind series.  Left Behind was a film starring Kirk Cameron that came out about 10 years ago and was basically a film about the rapture that the religious right ate up with a spoon.  It’s based on a series of books that cater to Evangelical and Born Again Christian types.  Not saying all of those people are bad, but the ones who push their beliefs on everyone and make laws a referendum on religion definitely are bad.

Anyway the writers of the original film must have gotten the hollywood money bug, because they want to reboot the series to be more accessible and more disaster film based.  I don’t know how you parse the religion out of this property, but it’s my guess that they are going to try and make modestly budgeted disaster films with a recognizable actor, and have the films hit you in the religious sense from more of a subliminal point.  However, where this is going to go wrong is anyone who is fervently religious and born again, is pretty much incapable of telling an understated story.  The religion is going to smack you in the mouth probably more, just now with a bigger budget.

I hate everything about this.

Also: Did Nicolas Cage officially throw in the towel?

Iron Man 3: The Trailer Before The Trailer

Terry Crews said it months ago “YOU GOT TO HAVE A TRAILER FOR THE TRAILER” when discussing Expendables 2, and Iron Man 3 heeded that call.

This is a 15 second teaser for the trailer coming out tomorrow on Apple Trailers.

I’m in.  But of course I am.

X-Men: Days of Future Past News

So some relatively interesting news came out of 20th Century Fox camp regarding the sequel to Xmen First Class.

Mark Millar (writer of Kick-Ass and Wanted), has come out to say that the sequel to Xmen set in the past, but dealing with the future, will be very Terminator-like in tone, which should only mean that we are finally going to get a story filled with Sentinels.  This should come as no surprise to anyone that read the original Days of Future Past story.  So this is a good thing.  It seems like Fox, now that Tom Rothman has left the studio is really going to try and focus on the Marvel properties they have and try and follow the Avenger blueprint by creating a cohesive world.  Millar, who will be working for Fox as the Marvel guru, similar to Whedon’s job with Disney, and he basically said that he wants to try and make it so that when we go and see an Xmen film, we don’t notice that it takes place outside of the Marvel Film Universe.  This to me is a step in the right direction, however Fox has a lot of continuity issues to clean up even with the new Xmen franchise as it relates to the former trilogy.

It sounds like Days of Future Past can help with this.  First Class, while excellent in my opinion, further made the Xmen universe convoluted especially when you compare it to Xmen Origins, and then to the first Xmen.  Famke Janssen has already intimated that she might be reprising the Jean Grey character, in The Wolverine, and Patrick Stewart even hinted he might be playing Xavier again, so maybe Days of Future Past will exist to sort of bridge all of the time/character incongruities, so that going forward we can just have normal stories that don’t make our heads hurt.  Maybe this will be like JJ Abrams’ Star Trek.  Or maybe it will just suck.

I don’t know either way, but at least they aren’t pretending like these issues aren’t going to just clean themselves up.  I hope Millar is the right man for the job, because I want to see awesome X-Men movies continue.

Fake Movie Friday – Model MissBehavior

Model MissBehavior is inspired by “Model Misbehavior”, a movie that I have no idea what it is about.  I saw the TV listing for it in a bar, and I thought “That could be a movie” but I’m making it in my image.

So here we go!

Model MissBehavior is about a High School for Models in NYC.  These are your average beautiful high school girls who go to private high school, but also are learning to become the next generation of SUPERMODELS.  The school is run by famous model-centric people.
